| Roses have a big appetite for organic matter. One easy way to help your roses thrive is to add coarsely chopped banana skins to your rose beds. The skins decompose quickly and provide nutrients including calcium, magnesium, sulfur and phosphates to your plants. The Latin expression sub rosa, which means in greatest confidence, is translated literally into "under the rose". The term is derived from an ancient custom of hanging a rose in a room, or over a table, to signify that the conversation was to be kept secret.
